He serves as chairman of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. During the 105th Congress, Pete chaired the Education at a Crossroads Project which examined what works and what is wasted in the American Education system. He also chaired the teamsters election investigation which examined the failed 1996 teamsters election. Hoekstra is a member of the House Budget Committee where he was happy to oversee the 1997, 70 billion dollar national budget surplus.
